Seeking a dynamic physician leader to advance the tripartite mission for an established Hospital Medicine program. Full-time position (0.30 FTE Clinical, 0.70 FTE Administrative). A successful candidate will be a skilled clinical practitioner; as well as, have a strong acumen for operational efficiency and quality improvement. Necessary skills include: ability to meet clinical performance targets and strong interpersonal skills, such as proficiency in giving honest and constructive feedback to physicians.

 

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital is the nation’s 4th largest public hospital. The Hospital Medicine department provides medical care to 1/3 of the patients in the acute care setting across UAB and UAB Highlands hospitals. Through a team of over 100 physicians and advanced practice providers, the Hospital Medicine program interfaces with over 250 patients per day by the way of inpatient medicine, general medicine consults, ultrasound guided bedside procedures, and integrated models of care delivery.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief of Hospital Medicine will:

  • Clinically practice as a Hospitalist (30% effort).
  • Represent the Hospital Medicine program at the highest levels of the organization including: the Medical Executive Committee, the Practice Leadership Council, and the Clinical Leadership Forum.
  • Establish and advance the strategic direction of the Hospital Medicine program.
  • Engage with Hospital Medicine faculty and staff to ensure effective communication and alignment of the strategic goals within the Hospital Medicine practice.
  • Engage with key, internal and external stakeholders by routinely soliciting feedback and enhancing collaboration among clinical services and disciplines.
  • Develop resources for professional growth and engagement for faculty and staff.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
  • Minimum 5 years of Hospitalist experience.
  • Demonstrated success as a leader in a large hospitalist organization, an interdisciplinary institute, or a large academic entity of comparable size and scope.
  • Knowledge and experience in the complexity of providing hospitalist care to a diverse population of patients.
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively across clinical disciplines as well as multiple organizations.
  • Experience in leading quality improvement initiatives.
  • Experience developing effective coaching/mentoring programs for improved performance, demonstrated ability to address underperforming providers.
