The Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a dynamic and innovative full-time Professor or Associate Professor Physician-Scientist Hospitalist to lead its Division of Hospital Medicine.

The Division Head will provide strategic and operational leadership with responsibility and accountability across the full range of mission areas. The successful candidate will partner with colleagues from the School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health and clinical partners, and UW-Madison, which was recently ranked the 14th best public institution by U.S. News & World Report. The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health.

They will provide direction for maintaining and growing clinical, educational and research programs that span the breadth of the field; guide faculty development; participate in the clinical teaching of medical students, residents and fellows; and mentor faculty, trainees and medical students.

The Division of Hospital Medicine's 60 physicians and 14 APPs provide a complete range of consultative, diagnostic and treatment services for patients locally and across Wisconsin. As "expert generalists," physicians from all over the region contact us to determine appropriate next steps for patients who may need inpatient care.

With strong clinical support from advance practice providers, we oversee admissions for most medical subspecialties, lead a 24/7 acute care hospital medicine service and general medicine consult service, and attend on the flagship teaching service for medical students and internal medicine residents. Through our procedure service, we provide ultrasound-guided thoracentesis, paracentesis and lumbar punctures right at the bedside. U.S. News & World Report ranks the UW Health hospitals and providers as top performers, reflecting our commitment to quality care.

The Division of Hospital Medicine has an active research program, with strong interest in pursuing clinical, translational and basic research questions in all areas of inpatient medicine. Studies have included how health policy influences clinical decision-making and the effect of discharge against medical advice on 30-day readmission. Recently, the Division joined an international, randomized clinical trial to observe the effects of therapeutic-dose anticoagulation on hospitalized COVID-19 patients. We paired with Hematology faculty to run UW as a study site, as recognized in the New England Journal of Medicine publications. This use of scholarship to improve the medical field for all mirrors the intentionality and empathy our providers use in their approach to patient care.

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the University of Wisconsin system. We have 11 subspecialty divisions; approximately 1500 faculty, staff and learners; a $120M research portfolio (FY20); a nationally recognized residency program; 21 subspecialty fellowships; and a primary clinical affiliation with UW Health, the integrated health system of UW-Madison.

In pursuit of our vision of health and equity for all, we develop exceptional leaders who transform the world of medicine through scholarship, innovation and partnership. Building on core values of innovation, health equity, kindness, professional fulfillment, and impact in Wisconsin and beyond, together we propel today's trailblazers forward to create a healthier future for all.

The School of Medicine and Public Health is committed to being a diverse, equitable, inclusive and anti-racist workplace and is an Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer. Applications from Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals, LGBTQ+ and non-binary identities, women, persons with disabilities, military service members and veterans are strongly encouraged.
