The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine is recruiting Academic Hospitalists to join the Division of Hospital Medicine at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor (Clinician Track) or Assistant Professor (Clinician Educator Track).

This is a full-time position featuring a hybrid schedule of 50% day shifts and 50% night shifts, providing a unique opportunity to engage in diverse clinical experiences at one of the nation’s leading academic institutions. Our hospitalists provide direct patient care while playing a critical role in teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians, including residents and medical students.

UT Southwestern Medical Center is the No.1 hospital in Dallas Fort-Worth for the eighth consecutive year and ranks among the nation’s top hospitals for care in 11 specialties – the most of any hospital in Texas, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional clinical care to a high-complexity patient population on med-surg level units
  • Day shifts: rounding on general ward patients or admitting new patients
  • Night shifts:
    • Admit both hospital medicine patients and admit patients on behalf of other medical services at night (subject to change)
    • Limited cross-cover responsibilities on certain nights, otherwise, night shifts are primarily admitting-only
  • Teach and mentor internal medicine residents and medical students while on teaching services
  • Collaborate with advanced practice providers in a shared visit model during some weeks
  • Moonlighting and daylighting opportunities are available at multiple clinical sites
  • No procedures required
  • Closed ICUs, no critical care requirement

During Day Shifts:

  • No admitting responsibilities when on day shifts (with very rare exceptions to provide back-up admitting support)
  • Full night cross-cover support by dedicated hospitalist APPs or internal medicine residents and fellows for hospital medicine service patients
  • No night pager call

Scheduling:

  • 7 days on/7 days off, with 12-hour shifts
  • 175 shifts per year (84 day shifts = 12 weeks of day shifts / 91 night shifts = 13 weeks of night shifts)
  • Alternate between days and nights every 4 weeks (i.e. work two 7-day stretches of day shifts over the course of one 4-week block, then work two 7-day stretches of night shifts over the next 4-week block)
  • Exception: When attending on internal medicine teaching wards, 14 days on
  • Day shifts: Mostly 12-hour shifts (no overnight pager call)

Night shifts: Staggered shifts, beginning as early as 4:00PM and ending as late as 7:00AM, not exceeding 12 hours

  • Guarantee of either Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day off every year (usually alternating years)

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree, or foreign equivalent, from an accredited institution
  • Board certified or board eligible with the American Board of Internal Medicine
  • Eligible for faculty appointment with UT Southwestern Medical Center as an Assistant or Associate Professor
  • Unrestricted Texas medical licensure
  • Demonstrated dedication to teaching and mentoring in an academic setting
  • Commitment to participation in quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and other scholarly activities
