Leadership & professional development: From setback to setup

Physicians are high achievers who expect the best from themselves and are often met with career success. However, career setbacks are a common part of this journey and effectively responding to them is crucial. Every unexpected turn allows for a time of reflection, growth, and resilience-building. Several strategies exist to help physicians process these setbacks and move forward. One longitudinal study followed medical students and found that the anticipation of setbacks, reaching out for support, and reflective learning were essential strategies for future success.1 This is true of the business world as well where it is noted that career “failures” can become successes if that person responds by focusing on why you lost, identifying a new path, and seizing new opportunities.2 The following will provide a framework to confront the unexpected and turn what may be viewed as a career setback into “a brave new ending.”

When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending.

REFLECT

How a person responds after the initial setback is crucial to being able to move forward. Whether you were passed over for the coveted leadership position or your grant was not funded, it is important to take time to reflect on the loss. The initial period of reflection often correlates to the stages of grief-denial, anger, even depression. To move forward, one must determine why the position was lost. Often, high-achieving physicians do not get to the stage of acceptance, instead they get stuck in self-preservation strategies. To successfully advance, it is important to seek feedback from trusted mentors and peers who will give an honest perspective. An honest self-assessment for growth opportunities is critical to determining the next best steps. Employing a growth mindset through this reflection process will set one up for future success.

REGROUP

After reflecting, gaining a deeper understanding of your personal strengths and core character traits can help you identify the next opportunity and market yourself for that position. It may also be useful to connect with professionals on this next step in your journey. A career coach or licensed therapist may help with the deep work needed to embark on the next chapter of your career. Taking the steps to gain a deeper knowledge of your motivation, passion, and strengths will prepare you to seize opportunities and help you better define career success.

REENGAGE

The path to a fulfilling career includes unexpected turns. Expecting the perfect job to arrive at the perfect time is a recipe for disappointment. Instead, focus on moving toward what aligns with your interests and skills. As you step into a new role, find the ways that your strengths can be a source of innovation. Seek out opportunities for faculty development and find internal and external mentors who can help you translate your ideas into success. There are opportunities to create and innovate in almost every position. Find a space where your unique perspective will add value to your career and your institution.

Career setbacks can be unexpected and overwhelming. After taking time to grieve the loss, reflecting on areas for personal growth and identifying your innate strengths can prepare you to take on the next opportunity. As you pivot, be sure to seek out mentorship and faculty development to gain the tools you need to be successful in your new role. Remember, the next step is not about finding the “perfect” job but the next best place to start on a fulfilling career path.
